This is one of my favourite paintings. It was painted by Diego Velázquez in 1656. The painting is called Las Meninas, the spanish word for The Maids of Honour.
The painting shows a large room in the Madrid palace of King Philip IV of Spain, and presents several figures. ] Some look out of the canvas towards the viewer, while others interact among themselves. The young Infanta Margarita is surrounded by her entourage of maids of honour, chaperone, bodyguard, two dwarfs and a dog. Just behind them, Velázquez portrays himself working at a large canvas. Velázquez looks outwards, probably where the king and the queen stand. In the background there is a mirror that reflects the upper bodies of the king and queen.
what I like in this painting is that it looks as if you stand outside and you look at the scene. Take a look at the painter, the man leaving the room and the king and queen shown on the mirror.
Isn't it different from other paintings?

Very beautiful description of this painting. It is one of my favourite paintings too. The detail of the royal couple in the background is amazing. There are more paintings of infanta Margarita. Have you seen them?
Yes, I have seen some. I've been to Picasso museum and I have seen some gigantic paintings.
